Helping Dundee through hardship
Dundee Food Bank has been a lifeline for its community for almost 19 years. Covering Dundee and the surrounding county of Angus, it serves a population of over 250,000 people. Though the city has seen improvement in recent years, Dundee has historically faced high levels of poverty and some of the worst drug-related death rates in Europe. The food bank provides more than just food—it’s a place where people can find support, guidance, and a listening ear.
“Sometimes helping someone isn’t just about giving them a bag of food,” says Hannah, Deputy Manager at Dundee Food Bank. “It’s about having a conversation over a cup of tea, signposting them to additional support, and making sure they know they’re not alone.”
The challenge of rising costs
Over the past year, the cost-of-living crisis has hit food banks hard. For Dundee Food Bank, one of the biggest challenges has been the rise in energy costs, which has affected nearly every client who walks through their doors. At the same time, donations have declined, making it harder to keep up with demand.
“We’re incredibly grateful for every donation we receive,” Hannah shares, “but the reality is, they don’t always meet the growing need. We’re having to buy more food ourselves, and that adds extra pressure.”
What’s needed most?
While food donations are always welcome, there are certain items the food bank struggles to keep in stock.
✅ Most needed: UHT milk, bars of soap, and shower gel. These essentials often get overlooked but make a huge difference to those accessing the food bank.
🚫 Least needed: Pasta—there’s already plenty in supply.
How Bankuet is helping
Working with Bankuet has transformed how Dundee Food Bank operates. Rather than relying solely on unpredictable donations, the team can now order exactly what they need, when they need it, and have it delivered straight to their door.
“Before, we’d have to go out to different shops to pick up extra stock. Now, we can plan ahead, be more efficient, and spend more time helping people rather than sourcing food.”
How you can help
Dundee Food Bank depends on donations to keep its doors open and continue serving the community. Whether you choose to donate food, money, or your time, every little helps.
“If, like me, you shop online, you can also donate to a food bank without having to visit in person,” Hannah explains. “It’s such a simple way to help.”
💡 Want to donate? With Bankuet, it’s easier than ever to support food banks. You can make a one-off or regular donation online, ensuring the food bank gets exactly what it needs. If you’d like to support Whitehawk Food Bank, consider donating via their page on Bankuet.
