Hunger Heroes: Supporting Brighton’s Most Vulnerable

Providing lifesaving support in Brighton

Brighton Food Bank has long been a pillar of support for the city’s most vulnerable, and had been open since 2000 providing emergency food parcels to those in crisis. They are also one of the biggest food banks in Brighton, operating three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and serve a wide area, from central Brighton to Haulingbury, covering a large portion of the city. But, like food banks across the country, they are feeling the strain as the need for help grows due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Food bank manager, Carmina, reflects on her role at the charity, explaining that while they have seen an increase in demand, they are also seeing the tangible impact of community donations.

“Every day, we meet incredible people who come to us for support. Some of these moments stay with you forever,” Carmina shares.

One such moment happened recently when a mother, using the food bank for the first time, was in awe of the support she received. “When I brought the food parcel out, she was in disbelief. ‘Is this all for me?’ she asked, and I said, ‘Yes, it is.’ She was overwhelmed, and you could see how much it meant to her and her son.”

Demand for help is rising, but donations are falling short

The rise in demand for food banks is not slowing down. Carmina explains, “We’re seeing more and more people, many for the first time, needing our help. The need is overwhelming, and we have gone through all of our reserves.”

Brighton Food Bank is now in need of a wide variety of items. “While we’ve received lots of pasta recently, what we really need are more protein-rich foods, such as tinned meat and fish. These are often more expensive for people to donate, but they make such a difference in providing balanced meals,” Carmina adds.

How Bankuet helps Brighton Food Bank meet rising demand

When asked how Bankuet has supported the food bank during this challenging time, Carmina explains how it’s been a game-changer. “Bankuet has allowed us to directly order the food we need. This means we can top up what we are running low on, like tinned meat and fish, with a click of a button. This has made such a difference, especially when we are facing emergencies and our shelves are bare. Knowing we can rely on Bankuet to quickly restock the shelves has been like a safety net for us.”

Volunteers: The heart of Brighton Food Bank

Behind every food parcel distributed at Brighton Food Bank is a team of dedicated volunteers, including those who have previously relied on the service themselves. “We’ve had clients who, after receiving our support, came back to volunteer once they were able to get back on their feet. Others have donated after they’ve managed to turn things around. It’s incredible to see how food banks can create a sense of community,” Carmina shares.

How you can help

Brighton Food Bank relies on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and local businesses to keep providing essential support. As demand continues to rise, your contribution could make a significant impact. You can donate directly via Bankuet, ensuring that the food bank receives exactly what it needs, when it’s needed most.

“Whether you donate £1 or £10, every bit counts. Your donation could help provide someone with a full week of food. We are so grateful for every supporter, and your help is what keeps us going,” says Carmina.

Together, we can make sure that no one in Brighton has to go hungry. If you’d like to support Brighton Food Bank, visit their Bankuet page today and help feed someone in need.
