In the heart of London, Westminster Food Bank is a lifeline for people struggling to make ends meet. Manager Heather shares how her team is adapting to growing demand, tackling digital exclusion, and ensuring no one is left behind.

A small food bank with a big impact

Hidden among the busy streets of central London, Westminster Food Bank supports a diverse mix of people — from young families to retirees.

“We see all sorts,” says Heather. “Singles, couples, families, the elderly. We’ve seen a real increase in older people coming through — their money just doesn’t stretch as far anymore. And during school holidays, demand always spikes as families have to feed children at home.”

When Heather first joined in 2016, the food bank mainly served single people and couples in their 20s and 30s. “Now we’re seeing much larger families — five or more people in a household. The community has changed, and so have the needs.”

Rising challenges in a digital world

As life moves increasingly online, digital exclusion is creating new barriers.

“Many people have a basic phone but not a smartphone,” Heather explains. “They’re often on pay-as-you-go, which runs out. Some aren’t confident using digital tools at all. But now, so much — from claiming benefits to booking appointments — has moved online.

“When people can’t update their records or apply for support digitally, they risk being sanctioned, which reduces their income and pushes them further into hardship.”

With libraries closing and landlines being phased out, staying connected is getting harder. “It’s a real issue,” she says. “People can’t always contact support agencies or even the food bank when they need help.”

How Bankuet helps bridge the gap

Bankuet has become a vital partner in helping the Westminster team meet growing demand.

“Being in Westminster, we’re a small food bank and can’t always meet the minimum bulk-buying levels that supermarkets require,” Heather says. “Bankuet does that for us. It means we can get what we actually need, when we need it, and have it delivered straight to us — which is no small thing in central London!”

Using Bankuet has made a real difference. “At first, I wasn’t sure about it, but once I tried it, I found it brilliant. It lets us choose the exact items we need and the quantities, rather than just receiving a set mix.”

What’s needed — and what’s not!

Like most food banks, Westminster receives some items more often than others.

“We’re always grateful for donations,” Heather says. “But we do get a lot of pasta and baked beans — far more than we can give out. What we really need more of are things like UHT milk, jam, tinned fruit, and gluten-free or special-diet foods.”

The team has also introduced ‘kettle packs’ — food parcels designed for people with no access to a kitchen. “Some clients only have a kettle,” Heather explains. “So we include things like couscous, instant noodles, or mashed potatoes — anything that can be made with just hot water. It means they can still have a warm, filling meal.”

Beyond food: tackling debt and isolation

Westminster Food Bank’s impact extends well beyond food.

“One of the best things we’ve done is having Citizens Advice Bureau sit in during our sessions,” Heather shares. “They’ve helped people clear or reduce debts, sort out problems with utilities, and even get arrears written off.

“We’ve had people come back just to say thank you — they’re back on their feet and no longer need the food bank. That’s what keeps us going.”

How you can help

As demand rises, consistent support is more important than ever.

“Regular donations help us plan,” Heather says. “They let us keep shelves stocked and make sure we can buy special dietary items when we need them. Every contribution makes a difference.”

The easiest way to help is through Bankuet. You can donate directly to Westminster Food Bank’s page and ensure they receive exactly what’s needed, when it’s needed.

“A massive thank you to everyone who donates,” Heather says. “You might think you’re just giving a few pounds — but that turns into real food on people’s tables. That’s the difference you’re making.”
